WASHINGTON, Apr 17: US President Donald Trump on Friday said he had a “very good conversation” with his “friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He was referring to the phone talks held between the two leaders on Tuesday.
“I had a very good talk with him, and he’s a friend of mine from India, and he’s doing great. We had a very good conversation,” Trump told reporters as he departed for Las Vegas to attend a roundtable discussion on tax cuts.
Trump had spoken to Modi on Tuesday to discuss bilateral relations and exchange views on the situation in West Asia, where tensions have escalated following conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Earlier, the US and Iran had declared a two-week ceasefire on April 7 and engaged in diplomatic talks, with Washington maintaining its position that Tehran should abandon its nuclear weapons and uranium enrichment programme.
The conflict had also impacted global energy markets, pushing gas prices higher amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route for global oil supplies.
During the Trump–Modi conversation, both leaders reportedly emphasized the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and ensuring secure maritime trade routes.
According to US Ambassador to India Sergei Gor, the 40-minute call ended with Trump telling Modi, “We all love you.”
This was the second phone call between the two leaders since the West Asia conflict escalated on February 28, the report added. (Agency)
