TEHRAN, Apr 17: Following the announcement of a 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel by US President Donald Trump, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf credited the development to what he described as the “steadfastness” of Hezbollah and the unity of the so-called “Axis of Resistance”.
In a post on X, Ghalibaf reiterated his earlier remarks, stating that if a ceasefire agreement was reached, it was due to the “steadfastness and struggle of Hezbollah and its actions, and the unity of the Axis of Resistance.”
“The ceasefire is nothing but the result of Hezbollah’s steadfastness and the unity of the Axis of Resistance. We will approach this ceasefire with caution and remain united until the full realisation of victory,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation for mediation efforts, saying, “I thank the mediating efforts of the State of Pakistan and General Asim Munir for endorsing this ceasefire. We stand by our commitment.”
The ceasefire comes amid heightened tensions along the Israel–Lebanon border, where clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah had escalated significantly following earlier regional conflicts.
The term “Axis of Resistance” is commonly used by Iranian officials to describe a network of allied groups and states opposing Israel and Western influence in the region, including Hezbollah, Hamas in Palestine, and Houthi forces in Yemen.
Ghalibaf’s remarks came shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to a 10-day ceasefire following intensive diplomatic efforts to reduce hostilities.
Trump said he held “excellent conversations” with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, confirming both sides had agreed to a temporary truce as a step toward broader peace efforts.
“I just had excellent conversations with President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon and Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. Both leaders have agreed to begin a 10-day ceasefire at 5 p.m. EST to work toward peace,” Trump stated on Truth Social.
The ceasefire comes at a sensitive time in West Asia after a period of escalating violence along the Israel–Lebanon border. (Agency)
