JAMMU, April 22 : In a first-of-its-kind development, a special freight train carrying 20 wagons of Amul milk and dairy products from Gujarat reached the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday, officials said.
A Northern Railway official told Kashmir News Service that the train departed from Linch Goods Shed in the Ahmedabad Division on April 20. It carried 10 BCN wagons to Bari Brahman Goods Shed in Jammu and 10 wagons to Anantnag Goods Shed in Kashmir.
Each consignment weighed around 500 tonnes and included a range of dairy products such as toned milk, milk powder, buttermilk, lassi, and other items.
Speaking to KNS, Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, termed the development a proud and historic moment for the Union Territory. He said the initiative has been planned keeping in mind the needs of local traders and households, ensuring steady availability of fresh milk across Jammu city and nearby districts.
“The direct rail connectivity will significantly cut down both transportation time and cost compared to road routes, benefiting local markets as well as consumers,” Singhal said.
The development comes a few months after the first rail consignment of 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt reached Anantnag from Kharaghoda in Gujarat in October 2025.
Officials said the initiative highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to delivering essential commodities to remote regions and is expected to further strengthen trade links between Gujarat’s dairy sector and markets in the Kashmir Valley. (Agency)
