Srinagar, Apr 29: Scores of residents, mostly women, staged a protest on Wednesday in the Mir Abad area of Batmaloo, Srinagar, over an acute shortage of drinking water. The protesters blocked the Batmaloo–Tengpora main road for some time, leading to disruption in vehicular movement.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir News Agency that the residents gathered on the road in the morning and raised slogans against the authorities for failing to ensure a regular water supply in the locality.
The protesting women said the area has been facing water scarcity for several days, causing severe inconvenience in their daily lives.
“We have been without water for many days. Our daily routine has been badly affected and despite repeated requests, no one is listening to us,” said a protester.
Another local resident said the shortage has created serious hardships for families, especially women, children, and the elderly. “We are forced to fetch water from far-off places,” she said.
The protesters demanded immediate restoration of the water supply and warned of intensified agitation if the issue is not resolved soon.
Meanwhile, traffic movement on the busy Batmaloo–Tengpora road remained affected for some time due to the protest. (Agency)
