It also aims to reduce non-tariff barriers that restrict trade and investment flows between the partner countries.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1qx4rzx\" data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"479\">India\u2013New Zealand FTA: Key Timeline<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"640\">Negotiations between India and New Zealand were first launched in 2010. After nine rounds of talks, they stalled in 2015. The process was revived in March 2025.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"780\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1xjz0f8\" data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"686\"><strong data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"663\">March 16, 2025:<\/strong> Negotiations resumed<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"12xrzco\" data-start=\"687\" data-end=\"729\"><strong data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"711\">December 22, 2025:<\/strong> Talks concluded<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"aqwy35\" data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"780\"><strong data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"751\">April 27, 2026:<\/strong> Agreement set to be signed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1xrzvix\" data-start=\"787\" data-end=\"812\">Scope of the Agreement<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"813\" data-end=\"851\">The FTA covers 20 chapters, data-start=\"1142\" data-end=\"1262\">Indian goods such as textiles, leather, plastic products, and engineering goods will enter New Zealand at zero duty.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"19u9rfu\" data-start=\"1263\" data-end=\"1318\">New Zealand\u2019s average import tariff is around 2.3%.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"19u4w59\" data-start=\"1319\" data-end=\"1462\">India has secured commitments in services sectors like IT, education, financial services, tourism, construction, and professional services.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"puvybg\" data-start=\"1463\" data-end=\"1606\">A new temporary employment visa pathway will allow up to 5,000 Indian professionals at a time to work in New Zealand for up to three years.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"18r89oh\" data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1716\">Indian exports like aviation fuel, pharmaceuticals, garments, and machinery will gain better market access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1cytbwf\" data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1750\">Benefits for New Zealand<\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"2306\">\n<li data-section-id=\"10jqfyp\" data-start=\"1752\" data-end=\"1897\">India will provide duty-free access to over 54% of New Zealand exports from day one, including sheep meat, wool, coal, and forestry products.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1rg0tru\" data-start=\"1898\" data-end=\"2035\">Tariff concessions will be given on products like apples, kiwifruit, manuka honey, and seafood, subject to quotas and price controls.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1d9nsqi\" data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2119\">Duties on items such as mussels and salmon will be phased out over seven years.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1fooos\" data-start=\"2120\" data-end=\"2210\">Import duties on iron, steel, and aluminium scrap will be removed over up to 10 years.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"gzdyt9\" data-start=\"2211\" data-end=\"2306\">Tariff-free access for products like avocados and persimmons will be phased in over 10 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"182kv5i\" data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2343\">Sensitive Sectors for India<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2452\">To protect farmers and MSMEs, India has excluded several sensitive sectors from duty concessions, including:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2645\">\n<li data-section-id=\"eapfkn\" data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2471\">Dairy products<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1kz056i\" data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2481\">Sugar<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"yh0u5s\" data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2547\">Vegetable products (onions, chana, peas, corn, almonds, etc.)<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"14go3km\" data-start=\"2548\" data-end=\"2567\">Animal products<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"13buru3\" data-start=\"2568\" data-end=\"2598\">Copper and aluminium goods<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"12wcymk\" data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2621\">Gems and jewellery<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"qy66td\" data-start=\"2622\" data-end=\"2645\">Arms and ammunition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1tgsrp0\" data-start=\"2652\" data-end=\"2677\">Investment Commitments<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2873\">New Zealand has committed to facilitating around USD 20 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) into India over the next 15 years.
