Eight Held for Vandalism During Protests Over Sexual Harassment of Girl Student in J&K

SRINAGAR, Apr 14: Police in Jammu and Kashmir have arrested eight individuals for allegedly indulging in vandalism during protests sparked by a sexual harassment case involving a girl student in Sopore, Baramulla district, officials said on Tuesday.

According to police, a senior lecturer at a government higher secondary school in Sopore has been booked for allegedly sexually assaulting a female student. The complaint triggered student protests on Monday.

“Sopore Police arrested eight miscreants involved in vandalism during a student protest; 25 more have been identified. Strict action is being taken against those disturbing public order,” police said in a post on X.

A senior police officer confirmed that a case has been registered against lecturer Ghulam Hassan Mir following the sexual assault complaint. He added that while protests erupted after the incident came to light, the situation largely remained peaceful.

Meanwhile, the Education Department has placed the accused lecturer under suspension and ordered a departmental inquiry. The Joint Director (North Kashmir) has been appointed as the inquiry officer and is expected to submit a report within 15 days, officials said. (Agency)
