CHANDIGARH, Apr 18: Punjab Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a cross-border drug smuggling module in Amritsar, arresting two persons and recovering 64.62 kg of heroin from their possession.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the Punjab government’s anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ achieved a major breakthrough with this recovery.
The operation was carried out jointly by the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police and the State Special Operations Cell in Amritsar.
The arrested accused have been identified as Sarwan Singh alias Gujjar and Shamsher Singh alias Shera, both residents of Amritsar.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were linked with Portugal-based handlers as well as Pakistan-based smugglers, Yadav said.
An FIR has been registered at Police Station SSOC in Amritsar, and further investigation is currently underway, he added. (Agencies)
