ANANTNAG, Apr 11 : The Irrigation Department on Saturday launched a large-scale demolition and anti-encroachment drive along a 10-km stretch of the historic Wohun canal, from Ganeshpora to Seer Hamdan in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, officials said.
The drive, aimed at restoring the natural flow and utility of the canal, is being carried out with the active support of the Revenue, Police, Jal Shakti, and Electricity departments.
Officials said that over the years, unauthorised constructions and encroachments had severely disrupted the water flow, affecting irrigation across thousands of kanals of agricultural land and impacting the livelihoods of local farmers.
The operation will continue in phases to fully clear the canal of all obstructions and restore its original course and capacity, authorities said.
Locals have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that the restoration will improve irrigation facilities and help bring the water body back to its original condition and historical significance. They also urged strict monitoring to prevent future encroachments.
The administration has appealed to the public for cooperation and reiterated its commitment to protecting vital water resources and public infrastructure. (Agency)
