Centre Must Win People’s Hearts for Real Peace in J&K: Mehbooba Mufti

SRINAGAR, Apr 16: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said that if the Centre wants to ensure real peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir, it must focus on winning the trust and hearts of the people.

Speaking to reporters in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, Mehbooba Mufti said that lasting peace in the region is not possible without meaningful dialogue between the Centre and the people.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president expressed hope that the Centre would soon realise there is no alternative to dialogue for resolving issues in Jammu and Kashmir.

She said that while security measures like deployment of the Army and laws such as AFSPA, PSA, and UAPA may control situations, they cannot help in winning people’s trust or hearts.

The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister added that the PDP’s outreach initiative ‘Kath Bath’ is aimed at understanding people’s concerns and addressing their sense of helplessness.

She said the initiative seeks to highlight the issues faced by people in the Valley, especially after the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the reorganisation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories, adding that it aims to help people overcome feelings of depression and frustration.
