J&K Athletes Shine in Wushu and Fencing, Clinch Three Gold Medals

In a major sporting achievement for Jammu and Kashmir, athletes from the Union Territory have secured three gold medals across two prominent international events, underlining their growing presence on the global sporting stage.

The latest success came in fencing, where Shreya Gupta clinched a gold medal at the Senior Fencing World Cup 2026 held in Athens from April 17 to 19. A senior gold medallist and among only four top-ranked Indian fencers selected for the World Cup, Shreya has been steadily strengthening her international profile. Having recently competed in the World Cup in Tashkent, her consistent performances reflect discipline, resilience, and rising stature in the sport.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir’s dominance in wushu was strongly reflected at the Wushu Star International Championship 2026 in Moscow, where two athletes secured gold medals.

Top-ranked wushu athlete Ansa Hassan Chishti delivered an outstanding performance to win gold, displaying remarkable technique and composure against elite international competitors. She was joined by Banu Pratap Singh, who also secured a gold medal, taking the Union Territory’s tally to two golds in the championship.

The combined achievements across fencing and wushu mark a significant milestone, with J&K athletes securing three gold medals in different international events within a short span—an accomplishment that highlights both individual excellence and the region’s growing sports infrastructure.

The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has hailed the performances as a proud moment for the Union Territory and the country.

Secretary Sports Council Nuzhat Gul said the achievements reflect the strengthening sports ecosystem in the region.

“This is a proud moment for Jammu & Kashmir. The gold medals by our athletes reflect the growing strength of our sports ecosystem and the potential of our youth to excel at the international level,” she said.

She added that such performances validate the government’s focus on grassroots development and will inspire young athletes across the Union Territory to pursue sports professionally.

“From the fencing arenas of Athens to the wushu mats of Moscow, our athletes are not only winning medals but also reshaping Jammu and Kashmir’s sporting identity,” she added. (Agency)
