In December 2023, Mumbai Indians made a high-profile move by bringing Hardik Pandya back into the franchise amid much fanfare and expectation. The decision also saw him being handed the captaincy, with the management banking on his leadership success with Gujarat Titans to revive MI’s fortunes. Hardik had earlier led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title and followed it up with a runner-up finish in 2023, strengthening his reputation as a promising young captain.
At that time, Mumbai Indians were going through a lean phase under Rohit Sharma, having gone three seasons without lifting the IPL trophy. The franchise believed the leadership transition to Hardik would mark a fresh start and help restore their dominance.
However, the last three seasons have not gone as planned for the five-time champions. In IPL 2024, Hardik faced heavy criticism and was booed by sections of the crowd as MI finished at the bottom of the table. Although the following season showed some improvement with a playoff qualification, the issues have resurfaced again this year. Mumbai Indians are struggling for consistency and currently sit near the bottom of the table with just two wins from eight matches.
As a result, discussions around Hardik Pandya’s captaincy have intensified, with several former players and analysts questioning whether the leadership experiment has worked in MI’s favour. Some believe the pressure of captaincy may be affecting his overall performance and suggest a possible change could benefit both the player and the franchise.
Former cricketer Simon Doull has also weighed in on the debate, stating that if Mumbai Indians are not planning to continue with Hardik as captain in the long term, they should consider relieving him of the role. According to him, clarity over leadership is crucial for the team’s direction moving forward.
Doull also noted that such a decision could have mixed outcomes, potentially freeing Hardik to focus on his game or impacting his confidence further. He, however, emphasized that Hardik remains one of the best all-rounders when fully fit and in rhythm.
Former Zimbabwe cricketer Pommie Mbangwa, meanwhile, urged caution, suggesting that the franchise should conduct a detailed review rather than making an emotional decision. He stressed the importance of assessing all factors, including team performance, leadership structure, and overall environment, before deciding the future direction.
As Mumbai Indians continue to struggle this season, the debate around Hardik Pandya’s captaincy is expected to remain a key talking point, with the franchise likely to face crucial decisions ahead of the next IPL cycle. (Agency)
