JAMMU, Apr 24: Chief Justice of the Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, Justice Arun Palli, said on Wednesday that the true value of journalism lies not in speed alone but in verification, balance, and integrity, asserting that journalism remains one of the noblest responsibilities in public life.
He made these remarks while addressing a gathering after presenting the R.K. Chhibber Memorial Best Journalist of the Year Award, organised by the Chhibber Memorial Trust in association with the Press Club of Jammu.
“Journalism occupies a vital place in every democracy by informing people, raising issues of public concern, questioning injustice, and promoting accountability in governance,” Justice Palli said.
He observed that journalism is one of the noblest responsibilities as it is rooted in the pursuit of truth and service to society. He added that journalists often act as the voice of the unheard and serve as a mirror for society, making journalism a key pillar of democratic life.
Referring to the digital era, the Chief Justice noted that while technology has made communication faster and wider, it has also increased challenges related to credibility, accuracy, and public trust.
“In such times, the true value of journalism lies not in speed alone, but in verification, balance, and integrity,” he emphasized.
Justice Palli further said that values such as integrity, discipline, honesty, and commitment to truth are timeless and continue to guide institutions and strengthen public confidence. He advised young journalists that while technology may change tools and platforms, fairness must remain a constant principle of journalism.
Paying tribute to Professor R.K. Chhibber, he said the values associated with his life remain highly relevant today. He added that awards in his memory appropriately recognise journalists who inform the public, highlight key issues, and strengthen democracy.
Congratulating the awardees, Justice Palli said their work has contributed to informed public discourse and public service, making them deserving of the honour.
He also lauded the Prof. R.K. Chhibber Memorial Trust and the Press Club of Jammu for continuing the initiative, stating that the best tribute to any great personality is to carry forward their values through meaningful institutions.
He expressed hope that such awards would continue to encourage fearless, fair, and credible journalism while strengthening the role of truth in public life. (Agency)
