India to Be Top-10 Sporting Nation by 2036: Mandaviya

BUDGAM, Apr 24: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday said India is set to emerge among the top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and aims to break into the top five by 2047.

Speaking to reporters after inaugurating a 30-bedded Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital at Ompora in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, Mandaviya said the Narendra Modi-led government has streamlined sports governance and created a more structured system to promote athletics in the country.

“The government is providing opportunities to youth to perform in the sports arena. I am confident that in the next ten years, by 2036, India will be among the top 10 sporting nations in the world, and by 2047 it will be among the top five,” Mandaviya said.

He said sustained government efforts have strengthened India’s sports ecosystem, adding that major international sporting events are also on the horizon.

“The country has won the bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and has also bid for the 2036 Olympic Games. The process is underway to meet all requirements and expectations of the International Olympic Committee,” he said.

Mandaviya further said initiatives like Fit India and the Khelo India programme have provided better opportunities for the country’s youth to excel in sports.

On the newly inaugurated hospital, he said the ESIC facility, built at a cost of ₹165 crore, will benefit over 50,000 workers and their families by providing free treatment.

He also announced that a nursing college will be added to the hospital in the future to provide training opportunities for youth in Jammu and Kashmir. (Agency)
